Chapter Seventeen
Heâd died and gone to heaven. Nick couldnât stop smiling as he walked to the knife block on Evaâs kitchen counter and pulled out one of the shorter blades for dividing the cinnamon roll. He could level with Eva about the food situation because she was as crazy for him as he was for her. It would be okay.
Taking his seat, he sliced the cinnamon roll in half and pushed the plate so they could both reach it. âBefore we make our plan, I have a confession. I ate a big breakfast at the ranch before I drove over here this morning.â
âYou were already full?â
âYes, maâam. Very much so. Garrett puts on a good spread.â
âWhy didnât you say something?â
âRafe thought your decision to cook was a sign that you liked me. When I saw how hard youâd worked, I figured you liked me a whole lot and Iâd better show my appreciation by eating a substantial amount.â
Her eyebrows lifted. âYou stuffed yourself to please me?â
âDonât get me wrong. Everything tasted amazing. Normally I mightâve been able to handle two big breakfast meals. But my stomach was in knots about how today would go. I knew what I wanted, butââ
âWhat did you want, exactly?â
âThis. You looking at me like Iâm the best thing since sliced bread.â
âNothing more?â
âWell, logically, if that part worked out, eventually other things would, too.â
She smiled. âBut you didnât bring condoms.â
âAre you kidding? What kind of SOB would agree to work in a womanâs home and pack condoms just in case?â
Her smile widened. âYouâre the real deal, arenât you?â
âI donât understand what you mean.â
âYou donât pretend to respect women so you can get what you want. You genuinely respect them.â
âOf course. I work for Henri Fox.â
That made her laugh. âShould I be giving her the credit?â
âMaybe not all of it. I like to think I had potential when I arrived at the Buckskin. But if I didnât respectânot just womenâeveryone, including myself and the critters, I wouldnât be employed there. Itâs a zero-tolerance zone.â
âI always believed that, and it seemed to bear out with the guys whoâve come into the salon, but I havenât spent time alone with any of them until today. Youâre the first.â
âDidnât realize I was representing the team.â
âAnd doing a great job.â She leaned toward him and propped her chin on her fist. âWhatâs the plan, cowboy?â
His body heated. âI really want to kiss you right now.â
âThatâs the plan?â
âThat would torpedo the plan. I just had to say it.â
âI really want to kiss you, too. But clearly thatâs not in our best interests.â
âI donât think so. Hereâs how I see it. You bid on me with the expectation Iâd tackle two jobs that are important to you.â
âNo, I bid on you because you rode in on a beautiful palomino and I couldnât let anyone else have you for twelve hours.â
âOh.â The urge to kiss her grew stronger. âBut originally, youââ
âYes, and youâve accomplished one big job already, despite my interference.â
âExcept for the mirror.â
âAnd the coat tree.
